Addressing Food & Organic Waste
According to Ontario statistics, Ontarians generate about 3.7 million tonnes of food and organic waste, which includes food that could have been eaten or repurposed, as well as unavoidable waste, such as food scraps and vegetable peelings. About 60% of this was sent to landfills. The amount of food wasted each year is particularly staggering. In Canada, about $31 billion worth of food is wasted annually. This equates to about $868 worth of food wastes per person per year. Many municipalities have made good progress in keeping food and organic waste from being sent to landfills. Municipalities have recovered through green bin / composting programs, over 1 million tonnes of green bin waste. Sending food and organic waste to landfills is ultimately unsustainable and puts additional strain on our landfills. Food waste does not compost in landfills because landfills are designed as sealed, air-tight (anaerobic) environments that prevent decomposition, rather than facilitating it. Without oxygen or sunlight, food waste decomposes very slowly, producing methane instead of turning into nutrient rich soil like most people believe. Composting, unlike landfills, create an aerobic environment which allows food waste to break down and create compostable material.

Waste Management Update
The Township has been working towards an expansion of the Osceola Landfill since 2010. In May of 2024 the Township was successful in receiving an expansion for the Osceola Landfill. The expansion is for approximately 30 years, however, 2 emergency expansions equating to about 6 years, were required as the Osceola Landfill was full. In September 2024 it was estimated that if the Township made no changes to waste management, did not make an effort for diversion of waste and increase recycling our landfill would be full in approximately 16 years.
Changes had to be implemented today to extend the life of our only landfill for tomorrow.
In June 2025, Admaston/Bromley Council passed By-Law 2025-23, being a new Waste Management By-Law that adopts a User Pay System for Waste Disposal.
Beginning September 2, 2025, the Township of Admaston/Bromley is moving to a User Pay System for waste disposal.
Bag Tags will be required to deposit household waste into the Township’s Waste Disposal Sites. Bag Tags will cost $2.50 each and shall be affixed to each bag of garbage (maximum size of 75L/50lbs.) All other waste disposal charges (Tipping Fees) can be found in the Fees & Charges By-Law.
Transparent Garbage Bags
Beginning January 1, 2026, transparent garbage bags are mandatory. All waste must be placed in transparent garbage bags.
(You can use one small ‘privacy bag’ inside the transparent bag for privacy items.) Please see the list of FAQs for more answers like this one.
A transparent bag program supports diversion initiatives, like the blue box recycling and the proper disposal of hazardous and prohibited items.
