Passing of Retired Fire Chief – Terry McHale
It is with a profound sense of loss I share news of former Fire Chief Terry McHale’s passing today.
Joining the Douglas Fire Department in 1973, Terry became Chief in 1989 and would serve our community in this role for over a quarter century until his retirement at the end of 2016. It was my privilege to call him Chief, but much more so to call him friend.
It speaks volumes of Terry’s deep commitment to our community that I could just as easily have called him former Bromley Township Councillor, near life-long member of the Douglas Lions Club or long-time member of the Douglas Recreation Committee.
Terry, along with his surviving wife Evelyn, are most widely known as proprietors of the Douglas Tavern for nearly fifty years, most particularly as gracious and generous hosts of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This annual pilgrimage to Douglas was the social event of the spring. A wonderfully boisterous and inviting festival, St. Patrick’s Day required an entire week to afford full expression. At its core, St. Patrick’s was a homecoming, not just for Douglas natives but those from across the Ottawa Valley. If Terry and Evelyn did not know you when you first visited, they assuredly welcomed you like family whenever you occasioned to drop by again.
Terry and his brother Jim partnered to form Bromley Farm Supply in 1979, purchasing O’Neill’s Garage where Terry had been working and continuing to meet the needs of the growing farm community up and down both sides of the Ottawa River. The McHales were a fixture at local fairs and would hold court at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show. Their business flourished over the next four decades and has continued to do so after Terry’s retirement several years ago.
Amidst all the activity, and the clamour that must surely have been part and parcel, Terry was most proud of his family. He and Evelyn imbued in daughters Kelly and Kathleen and son Bill the same community mindedness. Their incredible generosity will continue.
Terry McHale was a selfless community builder his entire life. He was a larger than life character that from time to time springs from the Valley, and in his various roles, there can scarcely be a soul in the Ottawa Valley that has not met or heard of him.
On behalf of Admaston/Bromley Council, staff and residents, I convey our deepest condolences to Evelyn, Kelly, Kathleen, Bill and all their families, as well as the extended McHale and O’Grady clans. The bonds had become increasing surly these last years, take comfort Terry has slipped them, and this giant of our community is no longer confined.
Michael Donohue, Mayor
